Hello, I'm Alex.

designer & web developer

With a formal background in both industrial design and exhibit design, I've recently added web development to my professional skill set. When I'm not designing, coding or spending time with my wife and two-year old daughter, you can find me cooking, gardening or playing tennis.

Exhibit Design Projects

I've spent over 15 years working as an exhibit designer and throughout that span I helped create dozens of unique displays and museum environments. Clients have a message they want to share through the exhibits and visitors want to learn and create memorable and meaningful experiences. There's a lot of complexity and variables that must be considered to make a quality museum experience. I understand it requires good communication and cooperation amongst many different parties to make these a reality.

By working on a wide variety of projects of different sizes I was able to wear many different hats. I worked directly with historians, architects, general contractors, media producers, artifact mounters, lighting designers, museum directors and carpenters. As a senior designer, I also trained and directed junior level designers. I believe that only through experience can a designer's connections form and toolkits expand.

Drawings & Renderings

I've learned to use many different types of drawings to communicate. Quick sketches are helpful for generating ideas and collaborating with other designers. Plans, Elevations and Details are useful when working with architects, general contractors and fabricators. Specialty Drawings are helpful for AV systems or Content location plans. Vignettes are useful for outlining interactives or other unique points of interest. AXO and Perspective Views allow clients to understand the space three-dimensionally and renderings are fully developed 3D scenes, primarily for marketing.

Intro to MVP

WannaWatch is an app that allows users to create a list of movies they want to watch. Though it's essentially a simple to-do list, it's helped me understand the concept of Minimal Viable Product.

Going Three-D

After learning the basics of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, I wanted to apply these tools to 3D graphic spaces. That led me Three.js and WebGL, short for Web Graphics Library, a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 2D and 3D graphics within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins.

Lift Off!

It was now clear to me that the potential of creating 3D web-based experiences with WebGL is virtually limitless! It's also really complex! My first project utilizing these libraries is RubberDuckieInOuterSpace. I've always loved the imagery of a cartooney character getting electrocuted and thus launched into outer space. There'd been a steady rise of rubber duckies in my milieu, so what better subject to blast off into the abyss!
